The Chicago Family Housing Community (CFHC) is a six-unit building at 3816 W North Ave.
We are a community that:
- welcomes children into each others' units to play
- shares childcare, both informally (e.g. your child comes over to play with mine) and
formally (e.g. I babysit for you when you have class Monday nights, and you babysit
for me when I have band Thursdays)
- has shared communal space in the basement and backyard
- plans community events, like building-wide dinners and block parties
- is intentionally inclusive of people of different races, classes, genders, sexual
orientations, and other social identities
CFHC is a co-op. This means:
- all residents of the co-op are its owners
- we work together to maintain common spaces and the building
- monthly payments go towards the building's mortgage and expenses
- if you move out, you can get back your payments towards the mortgage principal
- when someone leaves, the other residents decide who will move in
